Pomology is a strand of botany specializing in the study of types and varieteies of fruit, together with their description and classification. In 1758, the Dutch scientist and mathematician Johann Hermann Knoop produced an extensive work with descriptions and illustrations of hte best varieties of endengered apples and pears in Holland, Germany, France, England, and other countries, which was the reason why they were grown.
